€2bn to be spent on Visa cards across Europe as people prepare for final rush on busiest shopping day
Over 26,000 transactions set to take place every minute on a Visa card
London, 23 December, 2010 - Thursday 23rd December is set to be the busiest ever day for shopping across Europe, according to analysis by Visa Europe. The payments company expects to process around 38m transactions, worth more than €2bn, throughout the day as people hunt for their last minute Christmas purchases.
In 2008 and 2009, the busiest days were 23rd December and with Christmas Day falling on a Saturday this year, Visa Europe predicts the busiest day for high street shopping in 2010 will be Thursday 23rd December.
An average of €1.3m every minute or more than €23,000 per second is expected to be spent on Visa cards across Europe during the course of the day. This equates to year-on-year growth of approximately 20% on high street spend, more than 70% of which is expected to be on Visa debit cards. During the busiest hour, Visa Europe expects to process more than 1,000 transactions every second compared to 894 in 2009.
